“I thought blue was your favorite color today,” Trish pointed at the bright pink cast on Emma’s tiny right wrist.

She shrugged and snuggled just a bit too close to Ryan. Trish didn’t consider herself a jealous person, but as her daughter got all the attention from the gorgeous man now driving them back to the rink, she wanted to be the one in the middle cuddling up to him. The Tylenol Ron had given Emma had kicked in and her daughter barely kept her eyes open. It would be an early night for little Emma.

“Ryan likes pink,” she muttered as she closed her eyes.

Trish gave Ryan a look. He flashed a crooked grin that had her a bit weak. As if that weren’t enough, he then gave her a wink and she forgot how to breathe. He shouldn’t be allowed to do things like that.

They didn’t say anything until he pulled up to the rink. Trish’s heart jumped to her throat when she glanced at the dash. Two degrees at three in the afternoon. It would be another freezing night.

“Where’s your car?”

“Thank you for the ride,” Trish said and opened her door. “Come on, Emma.”

“No.”

“Your car?” Ryan pushed.

“We walked.”

“Close your door. I am not letting you walk.”

She glanced at her daughter, all snug and half asleep. She wanted to argue, her pride in full swing, but a ride home definitely sounded better than walking. Besides, she’d have to carry Emma.

“This is not up for discussion, Trish. You are not walking. Period.”

She closed it and tried to ignore the way her cheeks caught fire when he flashed those hazel eyes at her. Being ordered around irritated her, she told herself. It had nothing to do with that look sizzling on his expression or the air of dominance that surrounded him.

By the time he pulled up into her driveway behind her car, Emma was sound asleep. Without a word, Ryan scooped her up and bundled her inside his coat as he carried her to the door.

Trish turned the knob but the damn thing wouldn’t open. She wiggled the handle. She kicked at the lower left corner. She even pushed it with her shoulder. Nothing budged the stubborn door.

“Let me.” He handed Emma to her and, instead of forcing it open, he ran his hand along where the door met the frame. With a nod, he then lifted the door by the knob and the damn thing opened. Just like that.

“How did you do that?”

“It’s all in the wrist. You never told me about the door. I can fix that for another one of your meals.”

She refused to laugh and yet, as she walked into the house, her lips betrayed her and curled into a grin. “I’m going to put her to bed.”

As she walked to the stairs, knowing how cold it would be up there, she turned and headed to her room. Emma would have several hours of sleep before Trish went to bed. In turn, she’d have several hours of peace before bedtime.
